The Play ‘N’ Learn Book & Educational Materials Store is Back and even Better!
 
When I spoke with the Play ‘N’ Learn Children’s Book Store director of 25+ years, I was curious to find out her motivation for reopening the shop that many of our contemporaries fondly remember from our childhood.
 
She told me her motivation stemmed from the fact that she wanted to reignite children’s interest in books and reading by completely overhauling the experience of being in a bookstore. In her words, ‘in a world that has become increasingly digital, returning to physical books can be seen as a luxury’. Her specific interest in children’s development has been a lifelong passion, and she has always appreciated children’s reading books and the manner in which “it draws the child into a world of words, fantasy, mystery, unending adventures and interesting characters”.
 
The new Play “N” Learn shop certainly takes after its name, delivering on its promise to provide material for both Playing and Learning. The store has a warm and welcoming atmosphere and is brightly lit with a stunningly colorful array of books and toys which really highlights what the store is about: discovery and immersion. There truly is something for everyone, with a wide range of both educational and recreational products to satisfy all ages from toddlers all the way up to young adults.

The book shop offers a wide range of books from toddler picture and early learning books, home learning books, teenage fiction, well known classics, reference books and books written by Ghanaian and African Writers.
 
The shop, according to the Director, also seeks to draw children further into this fantasy through various activities, including, writing, drawing, coloring and painting.  Also available are young art items and stationery, active play items such as Lego, Bristle Bricks and Megabloks construction bricks and toys. It also has a wide range of jigsaw puzzles from two pieces to one thousand pieces, matching, memory and language and literacy games, and teachers resources to name a few.
 
This newly renovated shop is markedly different from its former namesake. This is because this time around, Play N Learn is not just a store, but strives to be an experience, one that fosters discovery, exploration, learning and creating and the possibility to better appreciate the world of words.
 
The essence of Play “N” Learn, is to function as a world of books where parents can bring their children into, not just because they need something, but because they are looking for a change of scene and searching for a way to disconnect from an increasingly stressful world. She also indicated that the store would operate in a way that was similar to a library, so that children could come in and will be encouraged to connect and interact with the products in stock to get a feel of the books before their parents make the purchase. They would be encouraged to look through the books and read if they wish.
 
As the beginning of the new academic year approaches, the Bookshop will also be offering the general public a one stop experience for purchasing of text books, stationery and all the essentials for going back to school.
